Top Patient Questions

More patients are asking about fluoride-free options than ever. Here's our top asked questions.

Is fluoride-free toothpaste actually effective?

Fluoride works by forming a compound called fluorapatite on the tooth surface, which helps resist acid. Nano-hydroxyapatite takes a different approach — it's the same mineral your enamel is already made of, so instead of forming a protective layer, it replenishes the mineral structure directly. The research on nHA has been building since the 1990s and it's a legitimate alternative, not a wellness trend.

Is nHA toothpaste worth it?

Not all nHA is the same. Concentration matters — most products use 2–3%, which is low enough that the effect is minimal. Mouthology uses 10%, which is the amount that shows up in clinical research. The particle shape also matters: rod-shaped particles align with enamel's natural structure better than spherical ones. It's worth reading the label before recommending any nHA product.

Can I use this with sensitive teeth?

Yes, and it may actually help. Nano-hydroxyapatite physically fills in exposed dentinal tubules, the microscopic channels that cause sensitivity (without relying on chemical agents like potassium nitrate). It's also SLS-free, which is relevant for patients whose sensitivity is worsened by the foaming agents in conventional toothpaste.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

It's fluoride-free, SLS-free, and free of artificial additives, so it checks the boxes patients are usually concerned about during pregnancy. As always, defer to the guidance of an OB.
